Hanged Man Tarot Card Meanings
My first reaction to the image on this card is “Ouch!” A man is tied to a tree like bar by his leg which just has to feel extremely uncomfortable if not hurt. But there is no pain on his face. If you look at his posture, he does not appear to be struggling, and in fact, if you turn the card around and look at him, he looks rather relaxed. Furthermore, he has a halo around his head, the kind that denotes wisdom for saints and martyrs in old paintings. Is he waiting for some knowledge? Is there a purpose to what he is doing?
So I begin to think about what he is actually doing up there and what it must be like for him. Well, from that angle, the world would look totally different, and his eyes are open and he is looking around. What else would he be able to do while he’s tied here? Nothing; he would just be able to observe and wait. But eventually he must come down; no one could be tied like that forever and the fact that he is not panicked or worried tells me he knows he will be right side up soon. When he does come down, no doubt he will have a new perspective on life and how things actually are, therefore his time as the Hanged Man will have served him.
The story this card seems to be telling me is that while it may appear that not much is happening at the moment, except for hanging around and waiting, that time in limbo is just as important as what is to come. It serves a purpose and while it may not seem so clear at the moment, clarity will come. The new perspective may leave us changed and with a new view of the world and of our very own philosophies; things that we once held dear or to be true may no longer seem that way. The time spent waiting around is a time to view the situation with a fresh new perspective, and to do so with peace and serenity not frustration or fear, because it will not last forever and things will be right way round again very soon.
