High Priestess Tarot Card Meanings
The starkness of the white and black of the High Priestess card is broken only by the colourful veil behind the figure and depicts bright pomegranates. There is a sense of wisdom and strength in this card. The lady in the centre of the card wears a moon crown (the Crown of Isis) and also has a crescent moon at her feet. The moon symbolizes illumination and also dreams and those things that are unseen. So this tells me that the Priestess is willing to give illumination. She appears to be knowledgeable as she holds in her lap an old scroll, and the pillars on either side of her give the feeling of strength, support and also makes me think of old buildings, like universities.
The pillars, the strength, and the wisdom all have a very masculine feel to them, but we are reminded of her femininity by the veil that hangs behind her. It has bright red pomegranates on it. Pomegranates are regarded by many cultures as symbolic of femininity, sexuality and fertility. Let’s not forget also that the moon is also a feminine symbol.
This image speaks to me of ancient wisdom because the Priestess is wearing the Crown of Isis. Isis is an ancient Egyptian Goddess and as well as being regarded as the epitome of motherhood and of the perfect wife, she was seen as bestowing power to the pharaoh. She was seen as having mystical powers and able to see into the future. The fact that the Priestess is worthy of wearing the Crown of Isis shows that she too must possess these qualities.
The Priestess would suggest that all the knowledge required is within. The way to access this knowledge and to even peer into the future is to use the energy of the Moon which lies at the Priestess’s feet. This would tell me that dreams, gut feelings and sheer instinct are to be relied upon at this time. Whereas the Magician was very much about channeling and directing that which was around him and available to him, the Priestess has everything within her already and she just has to rely on what she knows.
